"Beauty gets the attention. Personality gets the heart." That is a quote I found recently and when you think about it, it has a lot of truth to it. It seemed fitting to put that particular quote on a photo of a peacock. Don't get me wrong! Peacocks are one of the most colorful and strikingly marked of all birds. There is so much beauty in a male peacock. I love to see their vibrant colors and watch them spread their gorgeous plume. But why do they do that anyway?
Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. The peacock spreads its fan of tail feathers and then struts and displays himself to potential mates. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.
Suitable males may gather harems of several females. Peacocks have been admired by humans and kept as pets for thousands of years. But they can be testy and do not always mix well with other domestic birds. Although peacocks are large, powerful birds, they are somewhat weak fliers and spend much of their time on the ground looking for food or perching. One of the first things that a new owner of peacocks and peahens will learn is that they can and do become stressed. These grand birds like peace and harmony....and LOTS of room to wander freely. They move rather slowly, thus creating an appearance of strutting. This has helped coin the term "proud as a peacock."
So in my thinking, they have amazing beauty, but beyond that, is there much personality? They are touted to be "proud", "strutting about", "cocky" and sometimes, not very friendly. They don't always associate well with others and needs lots of their OWN space.
In comparison, there are people who are so beautiful on the outside. That beauty immediately attracts people to want to know them, to meet them, etc. But when you do get to know them, is the personality always there? Can they be very boastful, proud, arrogant, self consumed? Can they be unsociable or just downright devoid of personality? But my point is this--exactly what the quote says, Beauty get the attention, but a beautiful personality, a warm, loving nature, a kind, compassionate person, a person willing to be a friend to all, wins a lot more hearts!! Personality makes the package complete! Even those who aren't as "beautiful" on the outside, can have such a wonderful personality that it makes them BEAUTIFUL to everyone who knows them! So, it may be outer or inner beauty. And I know many wonderful, beautiful friends who definitely have both...beauty and personality....and that is such "A Winning Combination!"
