Description
Billy And The Kids were very cute! David took this photo and as I looked at it, a memory from my childhood came back. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goats, so I have no idea what kind these little domesticated goats were. Males and females have beards and are born with two horns. I named the little multicolored one with the beard in the photo Billy because he reminded me of the old rhyme Billy Goats Gruff. He looks so much like the goat used in photos in that childhood rhyme where three billy goats tried to cross an old bridge to get to a green pasture to feed.
A mean troll lived under the bridge. As each goat tried to cross the bridge the troll called out to each one that he was coming to eat them. Each one pled with the troll that he was small and a bigger one would be coming along soon. The troll dismissed the first two, eagerly awaiting the biggest goat to cross the bridge. When the largest goat tried to cross, the troll confronted him and he threatened the old troll. He told him that he was the biggest but he also had big horns and would attack him. He did and defeated the troll.
I remember the lessons of that fairy tale. Fairy tales are based so often on good versus evil and this one is no different. The troll was evil and the three billy goats were brave to even cross that bridge and try to trick that evil troll. They appealed to his GREED. As each one offered him a bigger prize in the next goat, he waited for the biggest goat to cross, but that goat turned out to be his downfall. That is often the result of greed and it can prove to be our downfall if we let it be our focus.
Even though the two smaller goats, or kids, were afraid, no doubt, they faced the troll with a clever way and a plan to get across. They did not run away, as they easily could have, not even having the courage to face the problem. But their quick thinking tempted the old troll to wait for the bigger prize. And that caused his demise.
Life is so much like that, as we let our focus get away from being honest, and keeping God as our focus. We can let greed the and inappropriate focus of always wanting more be our downfall. We must focus on being satisfied with what we have, not always LONGING FOR MORE. The troll could have taken either one of the smaller goats easily and would have most likely been satisfied, but he did not see that. He only concentrated what he WANTED, his selfish desires, not what he NEEDED.
