These lighted derricks are located in Kilgore, Texas in what is called the "World's Richest Acre." This 1.195 acre tract had its first production on June 12,1932. According to the Historical Marker on the site, Steel Derricks towered over more than 1,000 oil wells in downtown Kilgore back then, making it the world's largest concentration of oil derricks in the history of the world. They are a sight to behold now, with colorful lights and stars atop them, especially during the holiday season.
Every year the City of Kilgore gets together around the derricks for the annual lighting ceremony. It kicks off the city's Christmas in the Patch season that draws holiday celebrants downtown for shopping and sight-seeing. This year, in 2012, Kilgore College, located also in Kilgore, has reason to celebrate--a huge anniversary for them. To commemorate the 75th year of Kilgore College, Dr. Bill Holda, president of the school, threw the switch that ignited 75 stars atop the oil derricks. Music, singers and dancers were part of the evening program, which featured the Kilgore College Rangerettes, the Ranger Band and the KC twirlers. Many come from far and near to view the lighted derricks during the Christmas holidays as well as all during the year.
