Description
Dynasty Red Flowering Cabbage are so pretty to me! They are ornamental flowers. Growing in rosette form these can look like a grand rose bloom on the ground, with colors of pink, rose, green, or white in combination. The inner leaves are ruffly and petal-like surrounded what would look like guard petals…but they are all the leaves of this fantasy plant. Dynasty Series are red, or white; with semi-waved leaves, they have round leaf form rather like giant roses.
Can you eat flowering cabbages and kale? Technically yes, but they don’t taste as good as the kind grown for the table. They are perfectly fine for a pretty garnish, though. The fancy-leaved cousins of our familiar vegetables make a bold statement in the cool season garden. As we said, the ornamental forms can be edible, too, but the cabbage is bitter, and when the white, pink, red, and purple leaves are cooked, they turn an unappetizing gray. That's why they are used mostly for garnishes. Tolerant of mild frosts, they're colorful all winter in mild climates.
Dynasty Red Flowering Cabbage says that they should be planted in sun or part sun, about 20" apart. They should grow to 15-18 inches in diameter. They do make beautiful fall colors in your garden!
