Description
"Hot Springs, Arkansas Hot Air Balloon" photograph was shot by Kathy White as it flew over Longview, Texas. The vibrantly colored balloon advertises for the Hot Springs National Park and also it boasts on the balloon of being "America's First Resort"
Hot Springs, Arkansas, gets its name from the naturally thermal spring waters found here. Flowing out of the ground at an average temperature of 143 F, the hot springs produce almost one million gallons of water each day. Native Americans called this area the Valley of the Vapors, and it was said to have been a neutral territory where all tribes could enjoy its healing waters in peace. Spanish and French settlers claimed the area in the mid-1500s. In fact, famous explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to visit Hot Springs in 1541.
Famous for its hot mineral waters and Ouachita Mountain scenery as well as its hotels and nightlife, Hot Springs is a bustling turn-of-the-century resort town. It is also an elegant spa city centered on a row of attractive Victorian-style bathhouses, the last ones completed in 1888. When Congress established the National Park Service, Hot Springs Reservation became Hot Springs National Park in 1921. One can still soak in the thermal waters on historic Bathhouse Row, enjoy a massage, great food, and shop till you drop, then have another thermal bath! Ha. We love visiting the resort city, having several friends who live there. We always find something exciting to do or see.
But as I said, this Arkansas based balloon was flying at the The Great Texas Balloon Races in Longview, Texas. It is a world class event attracting the very best competitive pilots from across the United States and the world. Considered by many of the pilots that compete at the Great Texas Balloon Race to be the best run event on the circuit, the Great Texas Balloon Race earned Longview the official designation as "The Balloon Capital of Texas" by the Governor of Texas in 1985. The Great Texas Balloon Race is a Balloon Federation of America event and was chosen to host the BFA's United States National Championship competition for 2012-2014. For those three years, the national competition will bring an additional three days of competition flights to the East Texas area. For the 2013 season, the event will take place during the week of July 22 through July 28, with the main attractions days being Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The event has refreshment and food booths, a safe area for children's Kids Land, arts and crafts vendor booths, and live entertainment concerts.
Dr. Bill Bussey, D.D.S., a world-record hot air balloon pilot, and local Longview dentist, was the main creator of the event. Along with other pilots, Dr. Bussey created an evening attraction designed to delight the crowds. Tethered balloons were illuminated setting off a spectacular display of light. This first-ever "balloon glow" became an instant success and is held both Friday and Saturday evenings. Whatever modifications have been made at balloon events around the world, you can know that this crowd-pleasing event began in Longview, Texas.
And it is definitely loved by all!
