Description
The Iris is a gorgeous flower and even though the purple iris is my favorite, I also love the white iris. Its flower meaning for its color means purity and kindness. So I have titled this Photograph "Purely White Iris".
The story of the Iris flower dates back to Ancient Greece, when the Greek Goddess Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, acted as the messenger between heaven and earth. This rainbow goddess carried messages for the gods Hera and Zeus and back to earth by the arc of the rainbow, hence the Iris flower is the symbol of idea and message.
The Iris flower is the February birth flower and the 25th wedding anniversary flower. Traditionally the Iris flower has been chosen to symbolize faith, valor, wisdom, hope, inspiration, cherished friendship, my compliments and
promise in love.
Iris flowers have rich meanings when given as gifts. The symbolic meaning of Iris flowers depends on the color. White Iris flowers symbolize purity and kindness, yellow Iris flowers symbolize passion, blue Iris flowers symbolize hope and faith and purple Iris flowers symbolize wisdom and compliments.
In Japan, it is believed that the Iris flower has the power to purify the body and protect the household from disease and evil.
Iris flowers became linked to the French royalty in the 12th century, eventually being recognized as their national symbol, the fleur-de-lis.
The Purple Iris is the State Flower of Tennessee. A stylized Yellow Iris is the symbol of Brussels.
Irises are one of the easiest perennials to grow. The flowers come in many colors such as white and yellow, blue and purple, brown and red, orange and pink, and even black. The majority of the iris flowers are in purple. Some irises grow in swamps, some of then grow in deserts, some in the cold far north and also in temperate climates. Siberian iris and bearded iris are the most common types of iris grown in the US.
Beside being a popular ornamental garden flower and in flower bouquets, it has also been used medicinally and in perfumery.
