Description
"Sit A Spell With God" was taken recently by my husband, David, at a beautiful place called Lee Gardens, in the outskirts of Gladewater, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Lee came to the East Texas area, recently married, but with very little to their names. In a rags to riches story, they did extremely well in the East Texas Oil Boom. The couple became wealthy in the oil industry and purchased a large piece of land just outside of their town. Mrs. Lee fell in love with the land and after Mr. Lee passed away, she purchased adjoining pieces of land, until she had amassed over 1,000 acres. Mrs. Lee turned the land into a budding paradise, purchasing an entire boxcar load of daffodil bulbs ordered from Holland, and with the help of 40 workers, all were planted on the countryside. She transformed the gravel pits into a 5 acre lake and a 3 acre pond. Both of these waters were stocked with bass, perch, and catfish, while surrounded with abundant wildlife, such as deer, wild turkey, and all types of birds, snakes and bobcats.
This is the 3 acre pond that she named Lake Josephine after her mother. She came to this very spot and would Sit A Spell With God. She would reflect, relax, read, and I'm sure...Pray. She loved this place. Mrs. Lee was a very sweet, but smart business woman, a devout Christian and in her lifetime, she did many good deeds for others that most people knew nothing about. I attended church with her as a young person and she was always such a sweet person to me. It is said that she came to this spot to escape the stress of her busy, demanding life. To have a bit of solitude in a hectic world. She invited our youth group out to this once blooming spot and we had picnics and devotionals here. I believe that she felt a little bit closer to God in HIS backyard.
When she passed away in 1984, she requested that the place be opened to the public during the daffodil blooming season of each year for all to enjoy as she did. People come each year from all over the place to visit and enjoy Mrs. Lee's Gardens. You can still see just a few daffodils lingering on the day David took this photo. This was the last day they were open this season, as the bulbs were disappearing and bad weather was imminent.
