Description
On a recent trip through Birmingham, Alabama I spotted the most awesome sight! It was a gigantic replica of the Statue of Liberty right off the highway and glowing in the night sky! We could not stop that night, but I told my husband I was not missing seeing that on the return home, which happened to be at night again.
A 36-foot-tall bronze replica, one of the largest replica statues in the world, accurately based on Bartholdi's "Liberty Enlightening the World", stands in Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. It was cast in 1956 at the Socit Antoine Durenne foundry in Somerville Haut Marne, France, for placement in 1958 atop the Liberty National Life Insurance Company Building in downtown Birmingham. But it was relocated and placed on a 60-foot-tall granite pedestal adjacent to Interstate 459 in 1989. Her location now is called Liberty Park. She is one fifth the size of her sister statue in New York City.
The flame is in fact lit with Alabama natural gas, and has only gone out twice in it's history. The small park area at the base of the statue is open to the public free of charge during daylight hours. Her next-door neighbor, the Birmingham Area Boy Scouts of America headquarters, is an underground structure designed to look like a bridge. There is also a small Boy Scout museum in the headquarters. And a granite wall with the names honoring Alabama Eagle Scouts.
The lady weighs in at 10 tons. It was cast in the same foundry in France that the original Statue of Liberty was cast in. It stood atop the Liberty National Insurance building in Birmingham for 30 years before it was moved to its location in Liberty Park.
The massive statue sits on a granite pedestal 61 feet tall in the center of Liberty Plaza. An American flag flies next to her. Just seeing it with her torch burning constantly, made my heart stir with patriotic emotions! I may never get to New York, but at least I have a good idea of the awesomeness of the one and only Lady Liberty!
