Description
I have always loved to see the striking colors of a male peacock. We had friends as we were growing up who raised peacocks and I used to love to go and find a beautiful peacock feather to take home. This one I photographed as he was showing out trying to impress his lady friend. I was impressed! He had such beautiful vibrant colors and a full plumage. He strutted around and was a perfect photography subject, turning from side to side, and in full circle as I shot all side of him.
He was at the Cypress Black Bayou Recreation Park Zoo, which was opened in November 1998. It is located near the Park’s entrance. The 8-acre zoo is a
state and federally approved facility. It started as an interactive petting zoo, with mostly farm animals that children could pet. Later on wild animals indigenous to Louisiana such as alligator, raccoon, bobcat, fox were added. Therefore it is not a petting zoo at present.
This zoo, north of Bossier City, is a tax supported zoo and is unique in that it is a zoo for wildlife education, rehabilitation, and a refuge for non releasable wild
animals. They support education for young people, teaching them about the animal feeding, habits, conservation, etc. They treat wild animals that are rescued from natural disasters, that are hit by vehicles, or that are orphaned, fallen from nests, etc. At the end of the treatment, those who recover with no permanent damage are released back to their habitats. Many animals that do not get well enough to survive in the wild become the permanent residents of the zoo. We had a great time there looking at all the animals and the employees were great in telling us about them all.
