Description
Fall is my favorite season of the year. It is displayed here as we peek in at Lake O' The Pines in Texas.
Lake O The Pines is located in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas. It is an outdoor enthusiasts' lake, where you can find fishing, boating, camping, hiking, swimming, sailing, bird watching or viewing the wildlife abundant there. We see lots of deer in the Lake O The Pines area when we are out on a photography excursion. Not to mention the gorgeous sunset shots we have captured there, and once in a while, we see a bald eagle or a red tailed hawk. But this particular day, I loved the way the water looked through the fall foliage. I felt as if I was just taking a peek through the trees at it.
Lake O The Pines encompasses 18,700 acres of water spreading out over parts of five East Texas counties. Those counties are Marion, Harrison, Upshur, Morris and Camp counties.
Lake O The Pines website states this -- "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District welcomes you to Lake O' the Pines, located in Jefferson, Texas. Our mission: supply water to the North East Municipal Water District and their customers and to provide flood protection to Shreveport, Louisiana and the Red River, also to offer some of the best fishing, camping and boating in Texas."
Lake O the Pines is a reservoir on Big Cypress Bayou, also known as Big Cypress Creek. The dam is located approximately 8.5 miles west of Jefferson.
It was formerly known as "Ferrell's Bridge Reservoir." and was created by the construction of the Ferrells Bridge Dam on the Big Cypress Bayou approximately 81 miles upstream from the bayou's confluence with the Red River. The reservoir was created as part of the overall plan for flood control in the Red River Basin below Denison Dam in Oklahoma. The project was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1946. Additional purposes of wildlife conservation, recreation, and water supply were added during construction. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the dam in January 1955 and the dam was completed on December 11, 1959.
