Description
Resurrection Bay of Seward, Alaska is the site of this photo taken by my husband, David, of a cargo vessel. The ship is a bulk carrier, Genco Picardy, showing to be built in 2005. It shows on the Marine Traffic website to have a length of 190m x 32m with a recorded speed of 12.9 knots or an average speed of 12.6 knots. According to Genco Shipping & Trading Limited's website, they transport iron ore, coal, grain, steel products and other dry bulk cargoes along worldwide shipping routes.
Seward, Alaska is absolutely breathtaking. It was founded in 1903, making it 12 years older than Anchorage and one of the oldest communities in Alaska.
It has approimately 4,000 year-round residents, with much more in the summer. More than 100 cruise ships visit Seward in a typical year. It is dramatically located at the foot of Mount Marathon and at the head of Resurrection Bay.
We chose to drive the 125 miles by highway from Anchorage to Seward. The drive along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet and through the Kenai Mountains is one of the most scenic in North America. The highway has been designated a National Forest Scenic Byway and it is just that, an amazing view in every direction.
In Seward, we took a day cruise into the Kenai Fjords National Park. It was a highlight of our trip. On the cruise, we saw beautiful glaciers, humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters, puffins, and numerous other birds and marine animals.
