Description
These historical Oil Derricks light the evening sky in downtown Kilgore, Texas. Kilgore has been identified by the Texas Legislature as the “City of Stars.” The stars that top the sixty oil derricks throughout the City are lighted during the holiday season. The discovery of the East Texas oil field in 1930 transformed this small town into a oil boom town. On part of this downtown block in the early 1930's stood the greatest concentration of oil derricks in the world; the area came to be known as the "World's Richest Acre."
