Description
This "Derrick At Synergy Park" shot was taken at the entrance of the park in Kilgore, Texas. It was a beautiful day, windy, but the sky was full of white, fluffy clouds. Underneath the derrick was a big patch of Texas Indian paintbrush wildflowers. Atop the massive derrick, stands a Texas star.
Synergy Park is located in Kilgore, Texas just minutes from downtown, Interstate 20 and Highway 259. It is nestled among the towering pine trees and other native woodlands of East Texas that surround a 10 acre lake called Elder Lake. The park includes nature trails, walking and jogging trails, flowers and flowering trees, a fishing dock, benches, rock formations, picnic area with a fireplace and is just a beautiful place to go. It is a business park that does not FEEL like a business park. In fact, there motto is "Business by Nature".
The Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation and the Kilgore Economic Development Corporation have a lot to do with the park and the restoring of all the oil derricks you see in and around Kilgore, Texas. KHPF has saved, raised
money, moved and erected 37 derricks, many in downtown. And their preservation has won them the coveted Anice Read Award from the Texas Historical Commission in 1989. Kilgore's derrick restoration was deemed the state's most unique preservation project for the year.
The Foundation was chartered in January 1987. The goal throughout the years has always remained constant - to preserve, promote and protect the unique heritage of Kilgore, Texas. And that definitely features oil. With the discovery of oil in Kilgore, the residents of the town realized the wealth that lie underneath them. Kilgore is known for their "World's Richest Acre" park and the many derricks there. Twenty years ago, one lone derrick stood on the World's Richest Acre, the original derrick to its site, preserved and maintained by the Kilgore Improvement and Beautification Association. Now 12 more derricks stand on the one-half city block known as the World's Richest Acre, adjacent to the railroad depot, including one with a workable pumping unit donated by the Marvin A. Smith family. During the boom, 24 derricks once stood side by side in that area.
