Description
Gladewater, also known as "The Antique Capital of East Texas" is also a "Texas Main Street City." The Texas Main Street Program of the Texas Historical Commission works to bring downtown revitalization to towns across the state.
The antique district stores have done just that for the city of Gladewater.
This building, circa 1936, has also helped to revitalize the downtown area. It used to be a favorite hangout of the local residents in Gladewater back in the day. It was one of the main movie theaters in town, The Cozy Theater." The Cozy saw many patrons go through their doors, and many budding artists, such as Elvis, competed in contests there.
The current owners, Jim and Nancy Ivy, revitalized the old theater into the "Gladewater Opry House." The Opry holds a two hour country music stage show every Saturday night at 8 pm. Jim is on stage and Nancy produces the show. They have won numerous awards for Gladewater, such as five consecutive "Opry of the Year" wins awarded by the Country Music Associations of America (CMAA)
.
The couple provides a family atmosphere for artists of all ages, songwriters and musicians to perform. There have been many talented folks giving their all at these shows to packed crowds. They book over 500 artists a year from the Ark-La-Tex and surrounding areas.
They also hold a Gospel Jubilee once a month on Friday nights at 7 pm. It is so good to see that building has come to life in such a successful way in Gladewater again. This photo of this historic building was taken at night because I wanted to show the Gladewater Opry House all dressed up for Christmas!
