Description
This beautiful sunflower is doing exactly what a sunflower should be doing. What is that you ask? Well, sunflowers, during growth, tilt during the day to face the sun, but stop once they begin blooming. By the time they are mature, sunflowers generally face east.
This tracking of the sun in young sunflower heads is called heliotropism. "Heliotropism ,hē'lē-ŏt'rə-pĭz'əm) is defined as the growth or movement of a fixed organism, especially a plant, toward or away from sunlight. Heliotropism can be easily seen in sunflowers, which slowly turn their large flowers so that they continually face the sun."
You can even see that it was a bright, sunshiny day when I shot this photograph, because the sun's ray is actually gently hitting the sunflower in the shot. The stately flower is basking in its warmth.
When I saw this photo, I couldn't help but name it after a little Christian hymn I had heard of called "Like A Sunflower". I could not find an author, most places said Author Unknown. The simple hymn is usually sung and taught to children in Bible classes. There aren't many words to it. But the ones that it does have speak volumes. If you have never heard it, the following link has a very sweet little girl singing it....https://youtu.be/lpZ1M7zPUgs
The words or lyrics go like this...
"Like a sunflower that follows
Every moment of the sun,
So I turn towards You, to follow You my God.
In simplicity, charity I follow (2)
In simplicity, honesty I follow (2)
In simplicity, fidelity I follow (2)"
We should all be like little children and sunflowers, and simply turn to God (the light of the world) in all things. We should not make it hard, but follow where He leads us, trusting Him to be leading us in the right direction, towards a growth that will make us bloom into the mature followers He needs us to be. We should practice these simple teachings of charity, honesty and fidelity.
As the sunflower soaks in the sun's warm gentle rays, it is nourished and blooms and grows accordingly. We too should bathe in the warm, glowing love of our Father.
But there is one difference I see. According to what it said above, the sunflower stops turning toward the sun. They stop following it. We, as His children should NEVER stop following His teachings. We are ALWAYS growing and maturing and should never stop. We will forever need His guidance to help us along life's difficult pathways and confusing, dark times. We will ALWAYS need His great love to assure us also in the good and wonderful times. We, therefore, should ALWAYS keep our faces turned
toward God, our Heavenly Father.
So..... "Like a sunflower that follows
Every moment of the sun,
So I turn towards You, to follow You my God."
