Description
"Mrs. Lee’s Pioneer Cabin" photograph was taken recently by my husband, David, at a beautiful place called Lee Gardens, quietly tucked away on the outskirts of Gladewater, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Lee came to the East Texas area, recently married, but with very little to their names. In a rags to riches story, they did extremely well in the East Texas Oil Boom. The couple became wealthy in the oil industry and purchased a large piece of land just outside of their town. Mrs. Lee fell in love with the land and after Mr. Lee passed away, she purchased adjoining pieces of land until she had amassed over 1,000 acres. Mrs. Lee turned the land into a budding paradise, purchasing an entire boxcar load of daffodil bulbs ordered from Holland, and with the help of 40 workers, all were planted on the countryside. She transformed the gravel pits into a 5 acre lake and a 3 acre pond. On the spot overlooking the 3 acre pond, that she named Lake Josephine after her mother, Mrs. Lee had a one room pioneer log cabin replica constructed in 1954. The cabin was constructed mostly from materials and wood from the property. She enjoyed spending time here in her cabin, on this lake and land, with God and all the beauty He created surrounding her. The cabin contains furniture from days of old and still has the furnishings she enjoyed. Visitors to Mrs. Lee’s Cabin love get a glimpse into days gone by, seeing the two rustic looking beds, one a trundle bed, the butter churn, the large wooden dining table and sitting benches. It is said that she came to this spot to escape the stress of her busy life…to have a bit of solitude in a hectic world. I believe that she felt a little bit closer to God in HIS backyard. She had friends over, sometimes her Garden Club, and they played cards, enjoyed a meal and visited when she wanted company there. She invited our church youth group to have a country outing, devotionals and picnics. It's a wonderful memory with my young son.
When she passed away in 1984, she requested that the place be opened to the public during the daffodil blooming season of each year for all to enjoy as she did. People come from all over the place to visit and enjoy Mrs. Lee's Gardens during only a short period of time that the daffodils are fully in bloom, usually during late February and early March. Visitors can see all the beauty by traveling along a four-mile trail that meanders around two lakes, between wooded valleys, and around this amazing replica pioneer log cabin. It is a sight that leaves visitors in absolute awe.
