Description
We met the owner of this great looking 1935 Ford Pickup at a local nature park. He was such a nice man and definitely proud of this gorgeous truck that we were admiring. He was eager to tell us about the vehicle. My husband discussed the V8 engine in it. In 1932, Ford decided to take a gamble, and offered their newly designed Ford Flathead V8, originally slated as an option for passenger cars, in their truck line. The decision proved to be a popular one with the buying public. Styling changes for both the passenger car and truck line in 1935, found favor with potential buyers, increasing sales for Ford. The trucks borrowed some design cues from their passenger car cousins and featured a slanted-back grille and windshield, tapered headlight housings, and curvaceous, skirted fenders.
One of their popular V8 Flathead engine fans back then was none other than Clyde Barrow, the infamous gangster of the duo Bonnie and Clyde. The car that Clyde preferred, one that offered both speed and comfort, was the Ford V-8. Clyde was so thankful for these cars that he wrote Henry Ford a letter on April 10, 1934. The letter read:
Tulsa, Okla
10th April
Mr. Henry Ford
Detroit Mich.
Dear Sir: --
While I still have got breath in my lungs I will tell you what a dandy car you make. I have drove Fords exclusively when I could get away with one. For sustained speed and freedom from trouble the Ford has got ever other car skinned and even if my business hasen't been strickly legal it don't hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V8 --
Yours truly
Clyde Champion Barrow
Over the years, many have questioned the authenticity of Clyde's letter to Henry Ford, based on a discrepancy over handwriting. The letter is currently on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
