Description
This photograph was taken at a nearby lake silhouetting a lake owner's dock and their patriotic American flag flying high above the water. With the absolutely stunning sunset behind the flag, we thought the scene was breathtaking. It showed the pride this family takes in our country and I thought of the old song I've sung many times, especially as a child, bringing back memories of school days...."This Land Is Your Land." Bruce Springsteen released a live version of it on Live/1975-85, in which he called it "about one of the most beautiful songs ever written about America."
The 1944 Lyrics to the song, written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 are as follows--
"This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.
As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me.
I roamed and I rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
While all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me.
When the sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
A voice was chanting, As the fog was lifting,
This land was made for you and me.
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me."
When I looked the lyrics up, I saw a link to Wikipedia and found that there were two other verses to this old folk song that I had never heard before. These verses are more political and speak of private property and hunger. Wikipedia says that the original manuscript confirms both of these verses.
But I do like the thought this song portrays that all across the country, the same land that I take pride in and love is also being loved and adored by others in all parts of this great country, no matter the state or region.
As is the case with many well-known songs, it has been the subject of an enormous number of variations and parodies. Many versions of the song have been recorded, with lyrics adjusted to fit other countries or regions.
