Description
We recently spent two days in Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana. We were out one of the afternoons shooting pictures when we came across the campus of University of Louisiana at Monroe. We were very impressed with how beautiful and nice the campus was. Especially impressive was this "University of Louisiana at Monroe Malone Stadium" I just had to get a shot of it. Towering high in the sky, Malone Stadium opened in 1978. It has a seating capacity of 30,427 fans. Their website says their largest crowd there was on September 21, 2012 when the ULM Warhawks went up against the Baylor Bears at the 2012 home opener and there were 31,175 people in attendance. The complex was named for James L. Malone, the coach who has won the most games in school history. It is located across Bayou Desiard from the main campus, the center of the school's athletic facilities. The field runs roughly north-northeast, with an imbalanced grandstand, the west stands being the larger stands.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) is a coeducational public university in Monroe, Louisiana, and part of the University of Louisiana System. ULM opened in 1931 as Ouachita Parish Junior College. Three years later it became the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University. In 1969, it granted doctoral degrees for the first time and was elevated to university status as Northeast Louisiana University (NLU). Some three decades later, NLU was in 1999 renamed ULM.
In the 21st century, the 75-year-old "Indians" mascot was retired because of NCAA restrictions against American Indian-themed mascots, considered "hostile and abusive" by Native Americans. A mascot committee selected Warhawks in 2006, honoring Maj. Gen. Claire Lee Chennault's United States Army Air Corps World War II unit's Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. The university has adopted logos featuring primarily hawk (bird) imagery; "ACE" debuted later that year and is seen in this photograph on either side of the name imagery.
ULM joined the Sun Belt Conference for all sports on July 1, 2006. The football and baseball stadiums and ULM Activities Center were designed by architect Hugh G. Parker of Bastrop.
