In our nearby town of Longview, Texas, at an activity center called the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, is this beautiful little garden area called the J.R. Curtis Garden for the Blind. It is named after a native son of Longview, who became the youngest mayor ever to serve in that city and at the time, the State of Texas. In 1977 he became the youngest mayor in Texas when he was appointed by the council at age 33 to the city's top job.
Mr. Curtis was very active in the Longview community, serving in numerous leadership capacities. He was a successful and popular radio broadcaster, named Texas Broadcaster of the Year in 1990. His life was cut short at the age of 55 following a motorcycle accident in Durango, Colorado. A memorial plaque in the garden states that J.R. Curtis believed that the beauty of nature can exist in, and be a part of industry and a growing vibrant community life. The memorial was dedicated in August 2002...but the garden lives on in his memory...

Reeling from his death, I sought some sort of diversion, needing to get my mind focused on anything besides my great loss. After a bad fall that resulted in surgery, I was recuperating at home and stir crazy. My husband took me out for drives in the country. We bought a new digital camera...
