Description
Giant Swallowtail butterflies are one of the largest species in the US. They are found in states east of the Continental Divide as well as in the southern part of the western US. We shot this one in the Dallas, Texas area. This was such a beautiful butterfly and it kept hanging around for a photograph. I love butterflies, so that thrilled me!
Their name is Giant Swallowtail – Papilio cresphontes. They lay eggs on plants in the citrus family; orange, grapefruit, kumkuat, etc. Along with trees that come to mind when we think of the word ‘citrus’, they eat plants such as Hercules’ Club, Hop Tree, and Prickly Ash.
The Giant Swallowtail has a wide yellow bar that goes from one side of the upper wing to the other side of the other upper wing. It has yellow under its wings.
Bringing delight to millions of hearts, butterflies serve the useful purpose of pollinating plants. In addition to being pollinators, butterflies are an important part of the food chain. Many animals eat butterfly eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult butterflies. Butterfly enthusiasts prefer all butterfly eggs to become adult butterflies. The problem is that if all eggs lived to become adult butterflies, butterflies would soon become extinct. Land development, modern farming techniques, and pesticide use has lowered the number of butterflies in nature.
