Description
We met Kilgore Mayor Ronnie Spradlin on the beautifully decorated streets of Kilgore, Texas. He was festively dressed all in black, complete with a long, black overcoat and a black topcoat, but topped off with a bright red scarf. We thought he looked very dapper, so we asked if he would mind if we took his photograph. He was very obliging and enthusiastic to stand in front of the wonderful Christmas lights and the lighted derricks of his town. We complimented the college town mayor on the wonderful job the city had done with their Christmas decorations. It is such a warm Christmas feel when you see the lights, experience the storefront window decorations and shop the stores for that unique Christmas gift.
Behind Mayor Spradlin, you can see in the background, a few of the lighted oil derricks looming above the World's Richest Acre Park, the buildings of downtown and the strands of multi-colored Christmas lights strung from one side of Main Street to the other side. Kilgore has been identified by the Texas Legislature as the “City of Stars.” The stars that top the sixty oil derricks throughout the City are lighted during the holiday season. This feature is only one of several reason the Legislature bestowed the title. Kilgore is also a "Main Street City."
Kilgore's population is over 12,00 but it still has a small town atmosphere. Kilgore College, The East Texas Oil Museum, The Texas Shakespeare Festival and the World Famous Kilgore College Rangerettes all call Kilgore, Texas home. Something Mayor, Ronnie Spradlin is very proud of.
