White tailed Deer are the smallest members of the North American deer family, Odocoileus Virginianus. Adult white tailed deer have reddish brown coats in the summer. Their coats fade to a duller grayish brown in the winter. This photo of the Majestic White Tailed Buck was taken in February. This buck, along with several white tailed doe were eating grass and vegetation in a back field behind a residential area they had wandered into. Male or mature bucks, are easily distinguishable by their rack, or antlers. New antlers are grown annually and fall off in the winter.
White tailed just refers to the white underside of their tails, which it displays and wags when they sense danger. They are almost always alert and looking all around as they graze. I have always loved to take pictures. My first job, at age 16, was receptionist for our local newspaper, but the owners soon included me in taking photos, darkroom and writing articles. Years later, a terrible event in my personal life brought back a love of taking photos that I had not been pursuing to any great extent. My only child passed away at the age of 22.
