Description
We took this photograph of the beautiful Prayer Tower and Gardens when we visited in the springtime. We saw gorgeous azaleas, pansies, tulips and a multitude of other flowers and plants. They were beautifully landscaped and quite enjoyable. There were people strolling around looking at the flowers. There were a few folks praying or enjoying a few minutes of serenity inside the chapel area. There was an adorable little girl there to have her photo made, dressed in her pretty Easter dress. Her mom let us take a few pics of her kicking her feet in the water of the sparkling fountain. There were other family groups having their photos taken on the lawn, among the flowers.
The Prayer Tower and Gardens is a beautiful, tranquil place, even though it is located in the middle of a busy downtown area of Pittsburg, Texas at the intersection of Lafayette and Jefferson Streets.
The Prayer Tower, a gift to the city from businessman Bo Pilgrim, features four Paccard bells from France and a chapel that never closes. The tower is made of Indiana limestone with a Vermont slate roof. It is beautifully landscaped with a gurgling fountain, a life-size bronze statue showing Jesus washing Peter's feet, and a variety of flowers and plants year round. The bells chime and play hymns on the hour. It has three long pews and a prayer altar inside the peaceful setting. Four stunning stained glass windows depict various scenes in the life of Jesus.
Designated as an historic Main Street City in 1986, Pittsburg's charm is evident in its lovely shops and a prayer tower with Paccard bells from France that chime the hour with soft melodies that waft through town. The prayer tower was dedicated to the city April 1992.
Pittsburg, Texas is located in the piney and hardwood forests of Northeast Texas. Pittsburg is the county seat of Camp County and is close to both Interstate 30 and Interstate 20. It is close to two state parks and five large lakes with an abundance of water sports - boating, fishing and skiing. Or if you prefer historic buildings and homes, antique shopping, and museums, Pittsburg has these things and more. Pittsburg takes you back to slower paced, gentler times...especially when you sit on one of the pews in the prayer tower and view the beautiful stain glass depicted Biblical scenes on the wall inside the prayer chapel. They truly are stunning.
Pittsburg is home to Pilgrim's Pride Corporation, Bo Pilgrim's home, the Ezekiel Airship (that flew a year before the Wright Brothers' airship). Cavender's Boot City began here. And the oldest rope driven elevator in Texas is still operating in one of the historic downtown businesses.
