Description
In our nearby town of Longview, Texas, at an activity center called the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, is this beautiful little garden area called the J.R. Curtis Garden for the Blind. It is named after a native son of Longview, who became the youngest mayor ever to serve in that city and at the time, the State of Texas. In 1977 he became the youngest mayor in Texas when he was appointed by the council at age 33 to the city's top job.
Mr. Curtis was very active in the Longview community, serving in numerous leadership capacities. He was a successful and popular radio broadcaster, named Texas Broadcaster of the Year in 1990. His life was cut short at the age of 55 following a motorcycle accident in Durango, Colorado. A memorial plaque in the garden states that J.R. Curtis believed that the beauty of nature can exist in, and be a part of industry and a growing vibrant community life. The memorial was dedicated in August 2002...but the garden lives on in his memory for all of us to enjoy.
"The goal of the J.R. Curtis, Jr. Memorial Garden for the Blind was to create a space in which learning and recreation came together to form a healing environment. The concept of a healing environment is based on the understanding that there is a medical connection between mind, body, and soul. Healing gardens are intended to provide an ordered place where its occupants will experience a sense of well-being and wonder that will alter their mood.
The garden evokes rhythms that energize the body, inform the spirit, and enhance the recuperative powers inherent in a weak body or mind."
The Garden surrounds a beautiful pond with a perpetual fountain, ADA sidewalks, an awesome gazebo, a wonderful wooden walk bridge, and a butterfly garden. It is beautifully manicured and accents flowers, healing plants and herbs, and flowering trees. There are rock walls and benches to accommodate visitors, bird baths, and bird houses, chimes and the sound of a waterfall in the pond....just a peaceful setting to sit in the "Gazebo Gardens" and help your mind to heal and relax.
And for photographers, it is an amazing place to take photos and bring your clients for photo shoots. We got some awesome shots there last week of a family of six....and couldn't help photographing some of the beauty of the surrounding gardens for ourselves.
