Description
This Merry Christmas lighted sign was photographed in a Christmas light park. This cheery greeting is said thousands upon thousands of times every holiday season. These greetings are used around the world to address strangers, family, coworkers or friends during the Christmas season. That timeframe spans an approximate range from late November up to December 25th.
The "Merry Christmas" phrase is contained in the sixteenth century secular English carol "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," and the first commercial Christmas card, produced in England in 1843.
In 1843, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol was published, and the ever cynical Ebeneezer Scrooge rudely deflects the friendly greeting: "If I could work my will... every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding." :)
After the visit from the Ghosts of Christmas effects his transformation, Scrooge exclaims; "I am as merry as a school-boy. A merry Christmas to everybody!" and heartily exchanges the wish to all he meets. His exclamation of the greeting helped tremendously in popularizing it.
In recent years, the phrase has come under scrutiny between the public consumers, businesses, and religious groups. It is a shame, to me, that such a wonderful, warm greeting should be tarnished in any way!
